ERP implementation, specifically, is the project of putting the system fully into operation inside the company for the first time. Unlike switching between two ERPs already in use, the starting point here is usually different: spreadsheets, systems isolated by department, or a control so informal there is nothing to carry over. The work starts with process mapping — understanding how purchasing, inventory, production, sales, tax and finance work today, even manually, before deciding how each one will run inside the new system.

From mapping comes parameterization: the stage where the ERP is configured to reflect the company's reality — chart of accounts, tax rules, inventory policy, approval thresholds, cost-center structure. Most future rework is avoided or created at this stage, depending on how deeply each department's process was understood before configuring the system.

Data migration in an implementation has a different flavor from migration between two ERPs: here the source is usually a spreadsheet, an unsupported legacy system or a set of parallel controls kept by each department. Customer and supplier records, inventory balances, financial position and the minimum legally required tax history need to be organized, validated and loaded into the new ERP before day one of use.

Module rollout rarely happens all at once. The most common order starts with the financial and tax core, because the whole operation depends on it, followed by purchasing and inventory, then production or services, and only then the more peripheral modules. Every module that goes live requires change management: clear communication to teams, training specific to the people who will use the system day to day, and a period of intensive support right after go-live, when real questions show up through use — not during training.
